Maui
Addicted® Hibiscus is
worldwide known as the flower of the Hawaiian islands.
The genus Hibiscus includes about 200 species; only
seven among them are regarded as native from Hawai’i.
The State of Hawai’i
flower, Yellow Hibiscus or Hibiscus
brackenridgei (ma’o hau hele, in hawaiian), is a tall
shrub with bright yellow flowers.
Two subspecies are recognized: H. b. brackenridgei,
a sprawling shrub to an erect tree found on the islands
of Molokaʻi,
Lānaʻi,
Maui, and Hawaiʻi;
and H. b. mokuleianus, a tree from dry habitats
on Kauaʻi and
Waiʻanae
mountain on Oʻahu
island. This species are listed as endangered species by
the USFWS.
